The Hummingbird
Type
Sculpture, Stainless steel, 2014
Artist
Victor Tan Wee Tar (b.1969), Singapore
Location
Sky Habitat Level 1, Singapore
Local artist Victor Tan captures a beautiful moment when a tiny hummingbird pauses in mid-air to drink in the sweet nectar of a flower. While taking its food, it also gives something back to the host – by helping the flower pollinate. The bird, entirely hand-moulded by the artist using stainless steel wire, is “enlarged” many times to reflect its oft-understated contribution to the habitat. The way it is connected to the stylised stainless-steel-tube flower – one of seven – allows itself to move. When the wind blows, the bird sways and flaps its wings, creating poetry in the air.
