Every year, the fashion industry announces a new look for the season. 2014 is the year for flowers to bloom in men’s wardrobe. Why should women have all the fun, right? The question is, can floral be manly, too? Will blooms work as well in the boardroom as it has on the beach?

The answer is a resounding: yes. The trick is to know how to do it right!

1. Prune Your Garden

Floral prints are bold fashion statements all by themselves. They don’t need help being played up. So, forget about the runway look featuring top-to-toe prints. It is something that is not easy to pull off anywhere else. Instead, limit flowers to just one part of your wardrobe.

Keep the rest of your look plain, streamline, and clean. Go for solid, neutral colours like cream, grey, beige, navy, black or brown for the rest of your look to let the floral pattern breathe.

2. Garden Variety

Some men cringe at the idea of wearing floral designs because what often comes to mind are loud Hawaiian shirts with huge hibiscus in garish colours. Flowers come in so many varieties, so can floral prints.

Opt for prints with light-coloured backgrounds in muted tones. If you don’t want the floral design to stand out too much, keep the background and the print in similar shades.

You can also opt for micro-prints. Smaller flowers can help you carry off the botanical motif without overpowering your style.

3. Layer Your Look

If you want to try out a daring design, layer your look. For example, pair a fussy floral shirt with a dark blazer and dark pants, or throw on a plain shirt over floral tees. It is all about balancing the look.

4. Attention to Detail

If you want your support of the flower movement to be more subtle, try introducing floral accents. Ties, suspenders, silk handkerchiefs and even footwear can all carry the floral motif. Pull and Bear has plimsolls with floral prints (S$69.90).

5. Botany at the Bottom

Another way to wear blooms without going overboard is to keep it away from your face. Pants, shorts, and boxers with floral patterns let you express yourself without going over the top (pun not intended).

When you know how to do it right, you can let your fashion sense blossom. Go right ahead and let flower power fuel you in from the boardroom to the beach!
