5 things about Raffles City you didn’t know
Happy Birthday, Singapore! 52 years on, here’s a #throwback to the milestones of Raffles City Singapore
1. Back to the 80s
Days after Singapore’s 15th birthday, we broke ground at Raffles City Singapore. The bold vision for the project was to become the ‘heart of the city’ to rejuvenate and connect the Orchard Road shopping belt with the Shenton Way commercial hub.
2. So what stood on the site before Raffles City Singapore?
Raffles City Singapore sits on the old Raffles Institution site, where Lim Bo Seng, Yusof Ishak and Lee Kuan Yew studied. Look around and you’ll see historical monuments – from the Parliament House, Victoria Theatre to the Padang, where we declared our independence as a nation.
3. What do the Louvre and Raffles City Singapore have in common?
Both the Louvre, world’s most Instagrammed museum, and Raffles City Singapore are designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei! With Raffles City Singapore, he created a ‘dimension of mystery’ where the towers appear cylindrical at one direction and rectangular from another. Take a closer look next time and tag us if you’re snapping a photo.
4. 6 years, 5 towers and over 150 storeys
In six years, we transformed the plot of land into a 400,000-sqm integrated complex comprising an office tower, shopping mall, convention centre and three hotel towers, one of which was the world’s tallest hotel back then. Singapore’s first ‘City within a City’ turns 31 this year!
5. +65 represent!
The ‘Made in Singapore’ Raffles City brand is so successful, we exported the concept overseas! There are now eight Raffles City developments in China - in fact, we just opened three this year in Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Shanghai (Changning).
