3 Ways to Recover from a Breakup like Brad
Just broke up? Recover quickly, rediscover your flair and win at life.
In the third installation of our four-part February special, we tell you how to bounce back from a breakup.
You opened your heart, and revealed your true self to the one you thought was The One. But instead of embracing you, warts and all, your partner brought you to an art gallery for what you thought was a date, but actually was a breakup.
Before you go do something extreme like quit your job to Eat, Pray, Love in a corner of the Indian subcontinent (or Pulau Ubin depending on your budget) remember you’ve got bills to pay, and realise that there are better ways to cope and mope.
It's not the end of the world. In fact, if one of Hollywood's leading men can make fun of his single status and go on and win one of the biggest awards of his career, things ain't so bad.
1. Keep your mind occupied with movies
Of course that's what Brad would do. It is his bread (and butter) - excuse the pun. The first thing you might want to do, is to distract yourself. And one of the best ways of keeping your mind off your ex, is watching movies.
When you’re trying to move past a relationship that didn’t work out, it can be easy to get stuck in your emotions, replaying past scenes in your rom-com-with-an-unfunny-ending. What you need to have instead is different scenes playing in your mind - a few reminders that there’s a whole new world out there that’s bigger than your own.
A (good) movie will put you on a rollercoaster of emotions that’ll leave you hanging till the finale, and then woah and behold, those negative emotions you had when you first walked in seem less sharp and distinct than before.
Salt Media @ Capital Tower
Even better news is, you can watch movies near your workplace!
That is, if you’re like the majority of people working in an office in the CBD. There’s a cinema tucked away in an office building there.
Salt Media & Entertainment operates a 228-seater Big Picture theatre located on the ninth level of Capital Tower along Robinson Road.
Catch a selection of the latest commercial blockbusters alongside inspirational and uplifting movies. Laugh, cry, be awed or be completely swept away – which is completely the point. For more showtimes or for more information, visit Salt Theatres.
Golden Village
Outside the CBD, while you're hitting the shops for retail therapy, find some time to watch a movie. Golden Village, the largest cinema chain in Singapore has lots of convenient locations and showtimes you can choose from across the island, including at Plaza Singapura, Tampines Mall, Junction 8 and one its latest locations, Funan!
There, check out the new Deluxe Plus halls, featuring seats that are both spacious and covered in leatherette.
These seats come with increased support and a semi-reclining feature to ensure increased comfort. The seats even come with a USB charging port!
2. Drown your sorrows (responsibly, and stylishly)
Some people visit wise gurus on mountain tops. Some just need copious amounts of booze and a proper party - hollywood style.
We all have our potion of choice in mind when we need to get over something extra mopey. Whatever is your posion of choice, you can probably find them at one of Singapore's top lifestyle and entertainment destination - Clarke Quay.
Here are some options to consider.
Hollywood meets real-life at the new Coyote Ugly Saloon at Clarke Quay. Inspired by the cult movie, look forward to a lively and energetic atmosphere; dancers on the bartops, great music and fantastic drinks. While Tyra Banks may not be there, you'll still have a fantastic boot-tapping time.
Enjoy the pool tables, mechanical bull, classic rock & pop, and happy hour deals 7 days a week!
Chupitos Bar is known best for their extremely wide array of flavoured shots – we’re talking 130 flavours to be exact, serving up everything from Pandan Cake shots to Cotton Candy topped cocktails. After all, “Chupitos” means “Little Drinks” in Spanish, and there’s plenty for you to try. With most shots going at $12, there’s no denying the value-for-money sorrows-drowning here.
Level Up takes sorrow-drowning to the next level, as Singapore’s original retro-themed arcade-bar.
Enjoy ‘80s cocktails and Asian bar bites with live music entertainment from local musicians.
With old-school arcade machines featuring games like Street Fighter and Metal Slug, a beer pong station, air hockey, and even childhood favourites like Bishi Bashi and Time Crisis, you’ll soon be pretty distracted.
3. Climb out of the rut
In the wake of a recent breakup, you’re going to be filled with pent-up energy that’s screaming to get out, time on your hands, and clouds on your mind. This is the perfect time to try out things you never thought of trying.
Like rockclimbing. Especially rockclimbing. You’ll not only physically blow off some steam, but every climb you do is going to do a great deal towards you regaining and rebuilding your mojo.
Plus - you'll be super fit at the end of it. Just like Brad.
A great place to climb at would be Funan.
But don’t start climbing the kinetic wall. Or the tree of life.
Go to B2 where Climb Central Funan is. There you get to experience one of the best climbing experiences available in the civic district, and some would say, in Singapore.
There are more than 200 climbs so there’s something for everybody – their motto is 'Everyone can climb.' Even the heartbroken.
But wait! You’re newly single right? And with that frown on your face, who’s gonna climb with you?
Well it’s a misconception that you need two persons to climb. Climbing can be perfectly satisfying alone as well!
Start with bouldering! Bouldering doesn’t require a rope because you’re never very far off the ground, and the ground we’re talking about is made of soft cushy mats that’ll catch any fall you take.
The bouldering area contains marked routes, or “problems,” that you’re supposed to figure out. Try, fall off, rest your arms for a bit, and then try again.
It's much easier than figuring out love. In between attempts, try not to stalk your ex on social media.
Alternatively, go to the autobelay routes!
What’s an autobelay? It’s a device at the top of the taller walls that controls the rope – automatically belaying you – instead of the traditional homosapien type of belayer.
The autobelay lowers you to the ground really slowly when you let go of the wall, so that’s how you complete a route on the autobelay route. Bonus - it helps you overcome your fear of letting go.
Fun, fun, fun!
Last but not least, after you’ve gone through these stages of self-recovery, you just might find that the cutie on the next route needs a human belay partner. *Wink!* * Wink!*
And ah, the cycle of life (and love) continues.
