600 underprivileged children in Malaysia benefit from donation of RM150,000 under My Schoolbag
Donation funded by CapitaLand Hope Foundation
Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, 10 December 2013 – CapitaMalls Asia Limited (CMA, SGX: JS8 and HKEx: 6813) and CapitaMalls Malaysia REIT Management Sdn. Bhd. (CMRM), the manager of CapitaMalls Malaysia Trust (CMMT), are pleased to announce today that 600 underprivileged children in Malaysia will benefit from a RM150,000 (about S$58,272 / HK$359,770) donation in the third run of the “My Schoolbag” programme in Malaysia this year. The donation is made possible with funding from CapitaLand Hope Foundation, the philanthropic arm of CapitaLand.
My Schoolbag is CMA’s signature annual corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, whereby schoolbags containing school and daily necessities are given to underprivileged children in the five countries where its malls operate – namely Singapore, China, Malaysia, Japan and India.
Under this year’s My Schoolbag programme in Malaysia, CMA and CMMT are working with 23 charity homes – three in Kuala Lumpur, 11 in Selangor, five in Penang, and two each in Kedah and Kuantan – to help a total of 600 underprivileged children under the homes’ care. These charity homes are mainly shelter homes for orphans and abandoned or abused children.
Accompanied by over 150 staff volunteers, the children will visit one of five CapitaMalls nearest to their charity home – namely Sungei Wang Plaza in Kuala Lumpur; The Mines in Selangor; Gurney Plaza and Queensbay Mall in Penang; and East Coast Mall in Kuantan – where they will be given school necessities including a new schoolbag, stationery, school uniform and school shoes worth a total of RM200 (about S$78 / HK$480) each. The children will also be treated to lunch and the malls’ Christmas shows, where they can get up close with the cast members in the meet and greet sessions.
Ms Sharon Lim, CEO of CMRM, said, “We are delighted to bring cheer and warmth to the communities where our malls operate in. Most importantly, we hope that the programme will give the underprivileged children a good headstart in their education, and a better learning journey ahead. We would also like to thank our volunteers, partners and retailers for their continuing support and commitment to the My Schoolbag programme.”
