above below beneath above is a work of art by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, produced specifically for Japanese architect Toyo Ito’s CapitaGreen. Fifty-six columns reach from ground to building, twisting and turning among sixteen geometric lamps like a system of roots and crystals. Differentiated from the building’s structural elements, the columns appear to emerge fully formed from below ground, as if they and the building that stems from them were merely an extension of life and growth that was already there. The organic formal language creates a subtle transition from the pavement into the building and underscores the botanical themes and ecological principles central to the building’s design.
