Presented by W!LD RICE, the Singapore Theatre Festival is an event dedicated to celebrating contemporary Singaporean theatre through the development and presentation of new and original local writing. There will be eight brand-new plays at the Festival as well as festivities such as Meet the Artists and readings of plays in development. Happening in July in the lead up to National Day, it is a time when the theatre artists and the public are encouraged to engage in conversations about theatre, Singapore, and the world.

Here are three shows that tell the familiar yet incisive stories of what it means to be Singaporean. Don’t miss them!

PRESS GANG
What do you do when you get your hands on a juicy piece of news that threatens to bring down the government of the day? Do you tell the truth? Or do you help to cover it up? Bold, revealing and thought-provoking, Tan Tarn How’s PRESS GANG plunges us into a newsroom in crisis and lifts the lid on the workings of the not-so-free press.

IMDA Rating: Advisory 16 (Mature Content)
Directed by: Ivan Heng
Starring: Benjamin Chow, Shane Mardjuki, Oniatta Effendi, Rei Poh, T. Sasitharan, Amanda Tee, and Yap Yi Kai.

SUPERVISION
From the playwright of GRANDMOTHER TONGUE, the runaway hit of Singapore Theatre Festival 2016 and sold-out success in 2017, comes SUPERVISION, a gripping look at surveillance and privacy. In this funny, tense and insightful new work, Thomas Lim asks pressing questions about privacy and dignity. What boundaries do we set up between us and those we consider strangers? And what happens when they are breached?

IMDA Rating: Advisory (Some Mature Content)
Directed by: Glen Goei
Starring: Janice Koh, Patrick Teoh, and Umi Kalthum Ismail

ONE METRE SQUARE: VOICES FROM SUNGEI ROAD
For many of us, the Sungei Road Market is now history. But, for its vendors, the Market was a way of life. It was their livelihood, their community. Listen to their stories of hope and heartbreak unfold in a multitude of dialects and told in the style of documentary theatre (like W!LD RICE's acclaimed Cooling Off Day and Cook A Pot of Curry). In this provocative play about poverty, pragmatism and the price of progress, ONE METRE SQUARE asks us to consider what we’ve lost one year after the Sungei Road Market has ceased to exist.

IMDA Rating: To Be Advised
Directed by Zelda Tatiana Ng
Starring: Ong Kian Sin, Tan Beng Tian, Michael Tan, Tay Kong Hui, and Yong Ser Pin.
