CapitaLand Group is committed to reducing emissions throughout our value chain.

Our Decarbonisation Strategy Aligns with this Commitment

Decarbonising CLD activities begins with assessing our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The majority of our GHG emissions stem from Scope 3 activities, predominantly from capital goods, aligning with the GHG Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard. Scope 1 and 2 emissions constitute a minority of our overall emissions, reflecting the necessity of taking a full value chain approach in our decarbonisation journey.

Our Path to Net Zero by 2050

Scope 3

More than 60% of our Scope 3 emissions come from the embodied carbon in capital goods such as procurement and use of concrete and steel.

By 2030, we aim to reduce embodied carbon emissions by at least 22% from 2019 baseline levels.

Scope 1 & 2

Together, these scopes represent a minor share of our total GHG emissions. We are committed to minimising greenhouse gas emissions from our operations and purchased electricity. Our goal is to reduce these emissions as much as possible and offset any remaining emissions that cannot be eliminated.

By 2030, all properties to be green certified. The operational carbon of CLD owned properties, managed by our sister company CapitaLand Investment (CLI), is included in CLI’s decarbonisation plan, aligning with the GHG Protocol's operational control approach.

Our three-step approach to drive decarbonisation in our portfolio

1. Design Optimisation

Approach:
- Implement Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies in every new development to minimize environmental impact right from the design stage, guided by our internal Sustainable Building Guidelines (SBGs).

Action:
- We commit to build capacity and capability in every decision-making role via ESG training and have Project Sustainability Coordinators to support project team in sustainable design throughout the project.
- In addition to upholding membership in the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Sustainability Product Councils and other organisations aiming at driving sustainable design in our core markets, we also collaborate with public and private organisations such as the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Growth and Transformation Scheme (GTS) for a novel Common Data Environment (CDE) platform and others. 2. Adoption of Low-Carbon Materials

Approach:
- Incrementally adopt low-carbon materials in markets where we operate, progressively collaborating with our stakeholders to establish low-carbon materials’ baselines and roadmaps.

Action:
- We continue collaborating with supply chain partners to procure low carbon materials. This includes engaging the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) Carbon Technical Committee as well as creating partnerships with innovative suppliers such as Pan-United and others that offer new low carbon technologies.

Case Study 1

At 7 Science Park Drive, within the Geneo Life Sciences and Innovation Cluster at Singapore Science Park, we implemented CarbonCure CO₂-mineralised concrete, a novel carbon capture, utilisation, and storage technology, certified with a '4-Tick' rating by the Singapore Green Building Product scheme, to 70% of its superstructure, making us the first developer in Singapore to use this innovation for superstructure works. This green technology integrates captured carbon dioxide into the concrete during production and has resulted in a reduction of over 2 million kg of CO₂ equivalent emissions.⁵

Case Study 2

At 1 Science Park Drive within the Geneo Life Sciences and Innovation Cluster at Singapore Science Park, we utilised Mass Engineered Timber (MET) for the structure of its Privately Owned Public Spaces (POPS). A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study estimated more than 85% reduction in embodied carbon compared to steel alternatives and around 60% reduction compared to reinforced concrete. The MET material has been sourced from sustainably certified forests in Finland.

Case Study 3:

As part of CapitaLand Sustainability X Challenge (CSXC), we actively integrate innovative solutions across our projects and buildings. In 2023, Magorium was selected as one of the winners of the CSXC. Their innovation involves recycling plastic waste into bitumen for use in asphalt roads, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional materials. We are now implementing this solution in the internal driveway of 27 International Business Park, further advancing our commitment to sustainable materials.

3. Efficient Construction Practices

Approach:
- Implement the Building Life Cycle Assessment framework for reducing emissions related to construction activities (A1 to A5 carbon related emissions).

Action:
- Our internal Environmental Tracking System (ETS) monitors and tracks resource use including water, waste and materials across project lifecycles while we progressively reduce construction emissions via new technologies and construction practices.

Case Study 1

An innovative Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) has been tested for the first time in 1 & 7 Science Park Drive, with the potential to expand adoption in J’den. This electric generator reduces CO2 emissions by 85% compared to a traditional diesel-powered generator, with minimal noise and zero direct air pollution.

Case Study 2

J’den is the first high-rise residential development in Singapore to pioneer the adoption of 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) technology for its precast bathroom, reducing manpower and materials on site while improving overall construction productivity.

Case Study 3

The S$50 million CapitaLand Innovation Fund (CIF) supports the testing and implementation of sustainability and high-tech innovations within the built environment, accelerating CapitaLand Group’s global sustainability efforts. Key initiatives include the adoption of CO₂-mineralised concrete at 7 Science Park Drive. Solar-powered traffic lights have also been temporarily deployed within the worksite to enhance sustainability measures further.

Additionally, grants from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority (BCA) supported the use of prefabricated modular mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems at CapitaSpring.
