Western specialty restaurant – Eighteen Chefs was founded by Chef Benny Se Teo in Singapore in 2007. He built the restaurant on the philosophy of a social enterprise which hires youths at risk and ex-convicts to help them re-enter the workforce. After undergoing several failures, Chef Benny emerged victorious as he has now expanded operations to over 12 restaurants in Singapore. To honour Chef Benny’s altruistic intentions of improving our society, he received several awards including the SME One Asia Award in 2015 and the Social Enterprise of the Year in 2013.
After his release from prison in 1993, Chef Benny experienced first-hand how employers shun ex-convicts when he was rejected during job interviews simply because he had a criminal record. Since then, he has made a commitment to help walk ex-offenders to their next level. Eighteen Chef’s extensive menu comprises of both Western dishes such as Ribeye Steaks and Beer-battered Fish & Chips, and local dishes such as Tom Yum Aglio Olio Pasta and Sambal Fried Rice.
