Life in a Notebook brings the world of art closer to our everyday life. Cartoonist Sam Lay lets his artistic vision move off the two-dimensional page and reaches beyond, into the three-dimensional world of his audience. The mundane and familiar objects of our domestic world such as pencils, paper clips and buttons come into Lay’s visual world in a marriage of perspective and humor that stretches the boundaries of the cartoon.

Do the things we see around us every day have another life? Can we look beyond what is routine and what we know of the world to see things in new ways? What happens when objects from different dimensions come together and interact? Lay’s experimental approach to cartoon making explores these questions, celebrates the commonplace, and invites audiences to un-see the world as we know it.

With the artist’s invitation to see the little things in our surroundings from a different light, Life in a Notebook draws upon the ordinary and often taken for granted elements of our universal experience and puts them to work in the artist’s world. Here, the unexpected is familiar, the familiar feels unexpected, and art meets the everyday!

 About the Artist, Sam Lay

Sam Lay is a Singapore based visual artist, illustrator, and cartoonist. Lay’s practice explores and satirizes our universal experience where the humor of everyday life is celebrated on a level that everyone can enjoy and understand. As a champion of the silent comic or pantomime technique, Lay lets his illustrations deliver the narrative or punchline without the accompanying text or speech of conventional cartoons.

In 2020, Lay created over 200 cartoons as part of The Oddly Sequential project, an initiative to promote the awareness of pantomime cartoons to audiences in Singapore. Now underway with his new project, Life in a Notebook, Lay strikes the creative chemistry between his illustrations and everyday life by incorporating common household objects into his cartoons. He continues to create a visual world that is a little bit familiar, a little bit new, and where everyone is welcome.
