CapitaLand Environmental, Health and Safety Policy
As an international corporate social citizen, CapitaLand is committed to protecting the environment and upholding the occupational health and safety of everyone in the workplace, and will
- Carry out exemplary Environmental, Health and Safety practices to minimise pollution and health and safety risks
- Seek continual improvement on its environmental, health and safety performance
- Comply with pertinent legislation and other requirements
- Implement the CapitaLand Green Buildings Guidelines and Occupational Health and Safety Programmes
We make this policy readily available to all employees, suppliers, service providers and partners
Since 2006, CapitaLand has stepped up its efforts in the area of environmental sustainability with the following initiatives.
- Establishment of a group-wide Green Committee to spearhead environmental initiatives across the group in Singapore and overseas. It is guided by a steering committee chaired by the Group President and CEO and comprises the chief executive officers of the various business units. This strong leadership involvement demonstrates top management commitment to the Green Initiatives.
- The Green Committee established an Environmental Management System (EMS) to ensure that environmental practices for development and management of CapitaLand’s properties are implemented consistently across the Group. ISO 14000 certification was obtained for Singapore in 2007, and for China and Vietnam in 2008.
- The committee also developed the CapitaLand Green Buildings Guidelines (GBG) as part of the EMS to advocate green best practices covering the entire lifecycle of a building from the feasibility, design, procurement, construction to operation stages.
- An internal Environmental Tracking System (ETS) was developed to track the environmental performance (energy and water usage, waste generation and carbon dioxide emission) of over 180 CapitaLand properties worldwide.
- Training and awareness – A slew of staff activities have been organized to heighten awareness and encourage activism in promoting Green initiatives within the Group. This included the screening of the award winning “An Inconvenient Truth” to CapitaLand staff and their family members, various Green courses by external speakers and in-house specialists, and visits to Pulau Semakau, Singapore’s first offshore and remaining landfill island, and Marina Barrage, Singapore’s first city reservoir providing water and flood control.
- To reach out to the community, CapitaLand launched the “Building a Greener Future” Programme. This is a series of green initiatives aimed at getting the Company’s stakeholders to play a role in protecting the environment. Initiatives under this programme include:
- CapitaFrog, a cute mascot designed to reinforce the green message to the community
- providing reusable shopping bags; placing CapitaLand recycling bins inside the malls, offices and serviced residences;
- the launch of “Green for Hope Project” which combines the two key corporate social responsibilities of CapitaLand in being green and to help needy children. For every one kilogramme of recyclable waste collected by participating Singapore primary schools, CapitaLand Hope Foundation (philanthropic arm of CapitaLand) donated S$2 to the welfare funds of these schools.
- adoption of the Marina Reservoir (Marina Bay and Singapore River), sponsorship of an electric boat to the Singapore Public Utilities Board for water monitoring and community outreach programmes, and waterways clean-ups by CapitaLand staff volunteers
- participation in the Earth Hour initiative with over 130 CapitaLand participating properties worldwide
- CapitaLand Muchuan Green Hope School Design Competition involving local talents in China to design a sustainable CapitaLand Hope School in Sichuan for underprivileged children.
- In 2009, CapitaLand enlarged its Environmental Management System to incorporate occupational health and safety, and obtained the OHSAS 18000 certification for the group in Singapore. The following year, CapitaLand extended its Environmental, Health and Safety Management System to China, Vietnam, Japan and Malaysia.
- Various awards have been conferred on the Group’s buildings for their commitments and achievements in environmental conservation. To see some of the awards the Group has won click here.
