At CapitaLand Development, we are committed to creating spaces that resonate deeply with people, embodying the evolving role of a master developer. We strive to enhance both the immediate and broader impacts on our stakeholders across various scales and geographies - from individual buildings to neighbourhoods and districts, internationally.
We are one of the earliest adopters of the World Green Building Council’s (WorldGBC) social impact framework globally. This structure introduces four ‘scopes’ to prioritise social impacts within the building sector, analogous to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
Our 'S' Action Plan
Scope 0: Entity and Internal Practices
- Our corporate office in Singapore has achieved the WELL Equity Rating, becoming the first real estate developer in Singapore to do so. This rating, based on evidence-based strategies from the WELL Standard, promotes health, safety, and social equity within the workplace. We have pioneered diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, including mental health policies and comprehensive evaluations of our diversity representation.
Scope 1: Building Users and Site
- As the first private developer in Singapore to join the WELL at Scale programme, we continue our commitment to enhancing wellness for employees, residents, and the community. In addition, we progressively explore integrating nature-based solutions and biophilic design into our properties.
- As we roll out WELL at Scale, some of our developments - 1 and 7 Science Park Drive at Geneo, Singapore Science Park, Mansion@8 in Zhejiang, China, and Heritage West Lake Office in Hanoi, Vietnam - are targeting to achieve WELL certification and have been awarded the WELL Core Precertification by the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).
Scope 2: Community and Surroundings
- We firmly believe that our long-term success is closely tied to the health and prosperity of the communities in which we operate.
- Our developments prioritise the broader community's well-being, focusing on connectivity, walkability, and social health determinants. Mansion@8 aims to be one of the first WELL Certified Communities in Zhejiang, China, setting a new benchmark for healthy urban living.
- CapitaLand Development (CLD) contributes a part of its annual net operating profit annually to CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF), the philanthropic arm of CapitaLand Group.
- CLD employees are also entitled to Volunteer Service Leave to volunteerism activities. We aim to achieve a volunteerism rate of more than 60%.
Scope 3: Supply and Value Chain
- We address the entire lifecycle, including indirect impacts such as workers' rights in our supply chain. The target is for our entire supply chain to abide by CapitaLand Group’s code of conduct and sustainability specifications for main contractors. We are actively expanding our ESG policies to encompass our supply and value chain.
Driving Change through Partnerships
We believe in the power of collaboration to drive sustainability and are expanding our consortium model by partnering with like-minded developers.
We also continue crafting partnerships with private and public entities, such as the Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC), Urban Land Institute (ULI) and National University of Singapore (NUS).
This integrated approach underscores our dedication to fostering sustainable, healthy, and socially vibrant communities.
CapitaLand Development is pleased to partner NUS Cities, an interdisciplinary research centre within the National University of Singapore, to promote joint research and development activities relating to sustainable urban planning and design.
