Passion x Discovery - the ingredients that bring dreams to fruition. INSIDE speaks to Tell Your Children, and learn that theirs is indeed a tale to tell our future generations.
Tell Your Children, the local collective highly esteemed for its unconventional illustrations and mad artistic talent, comprises Deon Phua, Lydia Yang, Russell Ong and Kevin Too. Together, the group has captivated its audience with larger-than-life art pieces on numerous prominent lifestyle initiatives and events, including the walls at the hype court and carpark of the Funan Showsuite.
Who are you?
Deon: ... together, we are Tell Your Children. We met when we were studying in Temasek Polytechnic. We were doing a Diploma in Visual Communications and majoring in Illustration. So that is where we all met.
After we graduated, the guys had to go to the army. And it was during then that we decided - why don't we form this collective, where we could help one another, build one another up in our careers as creative artists or illustrators.
Lydia: I guess we all started liking drawing or illustrating when we were younger. And then we took it to school where we took a Visual Communications course and majored in Illustration. And now we are doing it professionally.
How is it like working together?
Russell: Well, working as a group definitely has its ups and downs. Working here for the past three years - it hasn't entirely been smooth sailing but it's a journey and we are all learning together.
The thing is that we try not to bring our egos to the table and we all strive to create better works for the entire team.
What is Tell Your Children's ultimate dream or goal?
Kevin: We will always strive to produce quality content, not just in the local market but on a global scale. So I guess we are striving for that in the coming year or two.
Words of wisdom for artists thinking of pursuing their passion?
"Set your goals high but stay humble.
Always celebrate others' successes and keep on persevering
when times get tough (which they sure will!)"
We think their story of teamwork, hard work, perseverance and creativity is one that will inspire our children. Don't let anything stop you from pursuing a journey of Passion x Discovery.
