The World’s Fastest Mooncake
We tried setting a Guinness World Record for the shortest time to make a mooncake. Did we nail it?
Come September every year, Singaporeans will travel to the moon and back to get their hands on the best mooncakes in town.
As self-proclaimed foodies here at INSIDE, we totally agree. Not only do we taste excitement when slicing a mooncake, (no salted egg yolk?! What travesty!) we wait in eager anticipation over the interesting and avant garde flavours, (bubble tea mooncakes anyone?) appearing on the market. When made well, mooncakes can be a total work of art.
This year, we decided to challenge ourselves and channel our inner chef. In preparing to gift these sweet treats to our friends and families, we thought to add some personal touches by making our own mooncakes!
Without further ado, we present to you – our (dismal) attempt to make mooncakes under 2 minutes. (Because we're busy people and ain't nobody got time to sit on our moons all day)
(DISCLAIMER: We may be foodies, but we're not trained chefs! Other than the ingredients list, all other steps in this tutorial should be taken with a pinch of salt. Not literally of course. Unless you enjoy salty mooncakes.)
Step 1: Prepare the ingredients
- 100g kou fen (cooked glutinous rice flour)
- 80g sugar
- 150ml cold water
- 30g shortening
- Filling (we used red bean paste, rolled into balls)
- Food colouring (we used pandan paste)
Step 2: Put everything together
Pour the kou fen, sugar and shortening into the mixing bowl.
Step 3: Mix It All Up!
Use your bare hands (speed!) and mix the ingredients together.
Make sure that the ingredients are evenly mixed!
Step 4: Get Wet & Sticky
Pour in the cold water and incorporate into the mixture.
As the ingredients start sticking together and to your hands, try not to doubt your decision to embark on this culinary adventure/potential mishap - We'll get through this together!
Step 5: Add Some Colour
Make it pop! It is time to add some colours.
We choose pandan paste to make our friends green with envy.
(PROTIP: Two dabs is not enough. be brave!)
Step 6: Eye Power It
It's time to test your estimation. In this race against time, there's no time for the measuring scale.
With just your sharp eyes and instinctual feel, separate your dough mixture into small dough balls and flatten them out.
Remember to roll your red bean filling into smaller balls too.
Step 7: Wrap It Up!
Wrap the red bean filling with your mooncake dough mixture.
Form a nice thick yummy layer and make sure none of the filling is spilling out.
Step 8: Fit The Mould
Pop your little balls of red bean filling covered in mooncake into the mooncake mould.
Once you pop it out from the mould, youll be greeted by beautiful floral patterns.
Voilà! You're done!

Nailed it! Oh wait ... I have a problem (and a radioactive- looking green blob)
What if your mooncake turned out be a green blob? Do you feel like you've been punished by the moon a la Sailor Moon? Do you feel like Gordon Ramsey just yelled at you and asked you to pack your knives and go home?
Don't worry. INSIDE got you sorted. Keep your hands clean and avoid the next hour washing dishes, why not head down to your nearest mall and get a box of fail-proof sure-to-delight mooncake treats?
Bonus: You don't need to spend the next hour cleaning your hands, washing the dishes and wiping down the kitchen.
