Home Is Where The Food Is
We bring together a double celebration of World Heritage Day and World Health Day this month, featuring food that’s both close to our hearts and good for you.

There are few things that unite and divide our nation as much as food. We talk about our favourite dishes and what we’re going to eat next even as we’re in the midst of eating; hot debates break out over what we believe to be the best versions of each dish. We mark occasions with a gathering over food—whether it’s celebratory wedding feasts, or bidding a colleague farewell . Not only is food the fuel of our nation, but also the glue that melds us—which is why it was a joy but no surprise that our hawker culture was inscribed into UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

While we love our hawker food, we’re also aware that some of the most delicious dishes aren’t always the healthiest. Below, we round up some of our F&B tenants in our Workspace community who are recreating local dishes, with a healthier, more nutritious twist.

Going Against The Grain

The words “cloud kitchens” and “full stack” have become buzzwords of late, but local online food company Grain was a pioneer in merging both since 2014. Making use of unused real estate space, the team manages everything from designing the online ordering experience, to developing the menu with an in-house R&D team, cooking the meals, and delivering them to homes and offices across Singapore. But enough about the technical stuff—what keeps people coming back to Grain is their food and the dining experience.

While the menu’s offerings change frequently, all dishes are carefully designed—healthy and good for you, but also tasty and appealing to various palates. Those with a penchant for local flavours would be impressed with Basil Thunder Tea Rice with Nourishing Dang Gui Broth, or a side of Seafood Beancurd Skin Roll with Spinach & Sesame Oyster Sauce. Other previously-seen dishes include Nourishing Herbal Chicken with Lotus Leaf Rice & Baby Bok Choy, and even a Cantonese-Thai Steamed Barramundi. Grain prides themselves on consistently setting the standard for their food, keeping us excited about what we’re going to eat next.

Grain offers delivery or pickup from two locations across the island, including Infinite Studios at 21 Media Circle, #01-07, S138562. Find out more here.

Putting The Fun In Fàn

If you're a fan of award-winning Tao Seafood Asia, you might recognise some of the restaurant’s signature—like its Seafood Rice and Tao Stewed Rice Vermicelli—at fUnRice, its sister brand at Asia Square Tower 2.

Here, you can enjoy the same quality in a more wallet-friendly manner, and what people really come for are the fUnRice bowls – imagine a typical Chinese restaurant dish of stewed abalone, mushrooms, and seasonal vegetables, served over fragrant jasmine rice The ‘fUn’ in ‘fUnRice’ is a play on ‘fàn’, Mandarin for rice.

Indeed, the broth is key here at fUnRice; this video shows an incredible number of mushrooms used in their secret, collagen-rice homemade broth, which is generously ladled over each fUnRice bowl to make for a nutritious, fulfilling meal. Options range from a simple Mushrooms & Vegetable fUnRice to the more decadent Mixed Seafood Extravaganza, boasting abalone, scallop, fish maw, prawns, and crab meat in fUnRice’s signature broth.

Visit fUnRice at Asia Square Tower 2, 12 Marina View, #02-15, S018961. Open from 1130AM–730PM on weekdays; closed on weekends.

Go With Your Gut

With the need for convenience and instant gratification, we sometimes turn to processed foods like cup noodles or frozen food to fill our stomachs. This, together with a realisation that our stress-filled society needed a little help, led to the creation of The Gut’s Feeling (TGF), which strives to make wholefoods the mainstream. This is often easier said than done, especially when we tend to associate health foods with bland greens and hefty price tags.

But TGF at Galaxis aims to challenge those misconceptions. The restaurant is home to a variety of dishes at reasonable prices, some of which would appeal to local taste buds—Chicken & Egg Grain (Walnut Satay Sauce) with Broccoli, Chickpea, Kimchi, for example, or a Turmeric Fish Burger in Organic Wholemeal Sourdough, with Silverfish Sambal Sauce

TGF also harvests vegetables daily from their in-house vertical hydroponics farm, and has their very own fermenter room where they brew kombucha over a period of 25 days, and create probiotic desserts. All of TGF’s efforts go a long way in educating the public about good gut health, and the importance of eating well—without having to forgo flavour, texture, and delight.

Visit The Gut’s Feeling at Galaxis, 1 Fusionopolis Place, #01-16/17, S138522. Open from 11AM–3PM, 5PM–8PM on weekdays, and 11AM–2PM on Saturday. Closed on Sundays.

Look more closely at the menu and you’ll find some surprises, not only wittily-named but locally-inspired. Cluck Norris, for example, features “the softest and juiciest fresh chicken breast” in a take on chicken rice, complete with their signature homemade chilli and ginger sauce.

There’s also Sticky Lips, a homemade collagen soup with chicken drumstick and veggies that has been cooked for 48 hours, resulting in a rich, thick soup.

With a mission to provide healthy and delicious staple food for everyone, every day, 365 Food promises that there’s no added MSG, preservatives, or additives in their food, which have been cooked from scratch.

For those who are time-pressed or simply don’t have the energy to whip up a nutritious meal at home, 365 Food has even engineered most of their food to be available in a vacuum-sealed, blast-frozen convenience pack that can be easily reheated so that you don’t have an excuse to order fast food for dinner.
