Family Fun for Everyone

Family means the world to us! To celebrate the International Day of Families on 15 May, here are some fun-filled activities you can enjoy with your most cherished loved ones.

Our families are by and large our closest kin, the ones who stick by us through the rollercoaster ride that is life. Spending quality time together as a family is important to strengthen the relationships we have with our loved ones because a strong family unit is crucial to the success of individuals, providing support, security, and unconditional love. However, it’s easy for life to get in the way and distract us from the bonds that we’ve created at home. As a result, precious time together can become few and far between, even when living under the same roof.

This International Day of Families, we bring you a number of family-friendly activities that you can partake in to engage with your family, blood or chosen, and enjoy a good time together.

New experiences make new memories

Every family has its own quirks and traditions, and within each family, you’ll likely find a variety of personalities and preferences. As such, trying new things together is beneficial in developing a greater sense of togetherness. Additionally, you can even embrace one another’s hobbies and interests to form deeper connections as a family.

Family activities can take many forms depending on what you enjoy. For those looking for a thrill, we challenge you to take on the GX-5 Extreme Swing at CQ @ Clarke Quay. The robotic contraption will send you yo-yoing over the Singapore river in a 40-metre free-fall, reaching speeds of over 120 kilometres per hour, which will undoubtedly be one for the books.

If your family is one to prefer remaining grounded, we reckon a session or two at Hologate will be more to your liking. An equally exhilarating experience, Hologate’s virtual reality systems will transport you into another dimension, with a collection of multiplayer games that will put your collaborative skills to the test.

Our favourite game has got to be Captain Cook, which will be a hit with the younger ones too. In this cooperative game, you’ll be tasked to feed hungry pirates or be forced to walk the plank—we can already hear the erupting fury of shouts, laughter, and passionate debates to be had.

Home is where the heart is

Another way to spend quality time as a family is by engaging in outdoor activities. No matter your age, you could probably do with a digital detox every now and then, and a good time is almost always guaranteed when we go outside and surround ourselves in nature. What we love about spending time outdoors is that it can be as relaxing as a picnic at the beach or as physical as a game of badminton. Whatever you choose to do, here’s a reminder to put away your devices to allow for more meaningful interactions with your loved ones.

Speaking of physical activities, family can be a huge source of motivation to keep fit and healthy, even more so when it’s done together. So, why not take advantage of the park connectors and nature trails near you to squeeze in an exercise while exploring our little island?

To pick up the pace, you can even add some wheels into the mix with scooters, roller skates, or bicycles. If you opt for cycling, we’d highly recommend the foldable bikes from renowned British manufacturer, Brompton. Hand-built with sleek titanium frames, their lightweight and sturdy bikes will glide safely through any terrain, making them excellent family carriages. But before you wheel away in excitement, don’t forget to slather on ample sunscreen when you go out in the sun!

Blockbusters are a family affair

For something a tad less physical, why not return indoors, switch off the lights, and turn up the speakers as you get cosy in front of the TV, because who doesn’t love a family movie night? With so many streaming services available these days, you can access an assortment of any genre you fancy from old-time classics to modern-day remakes with the click of a button. And if your household can’t seem to agree on what to watch, perhaps a quick round of rock-paper-scissors will do the trick—winner gets the final say!

You can’t have a film screening without popcorn, and no other brand nails the snack quite like myEureka. Since Mother’s Day is also approaching (14th May), you can now get your hands on their limited-edition Mother’s Day handwoven picnic hamper* that is chock-full of crunchy goodies for Mum, and a couple more packs for the rest of the family too.

*Promotion ends 15 May or while stocks last. T&Cs apply.

That said, nothing beats the big screen of a cinema, especially when catching the latest box-office hits. Well, you don’t have to wait for the school holidays to Experience The Cinematic Wonders of some of the biggest movies of the year at CapitaLand Malls! From now till 2 July, watch three highly-anticipated movies—Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Disney’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and Pixar’s animated romantic comedy Elemental—come to life with exclusive screenings, themed-activities, pop-up stores, and many more exciting happenings. There’s truly something for the whole family.

Did we mention that there are lots of attractive prizes to be won? For one, you can stand a chance to win free movie screening eVouchers and $10 eCapitaVoucher as you shop*. What’s more, there are photo opportunities scattered across multiple malls, so you can strike a pose with your favourite characters and bring home a memento of the fun time spent with your family.

Food brings us closer together

Finally, no gathering is complete without food, food, and more food. Often at the heart of intimate conversations and connections lies a spread of homely dishes that are unique to every family, so obviously we can’t forget about the bond we share over food. Cooking and preparing meals together can not only be a lot of fun, but is also the best time to learn or pass on household recipes and spread the family’s heritage and culture.

However, if you’re not much of a chef or simply not in the mood to cook up a storm, not to worry, because there are plenty of restaurants out there for you to dine at CapitaLand malls.

For starters, you have to bring your family down to Itacho Sushi to savour an authentic taste of Japan. Just how authentic, you ask? Well, ingredients used at Itacho are sourced and delivered directly from Japan, so you know you’re getting the real deal. While you’re there, have a go at their latest summer edition of chef recommendations, such as the popular Aburi Seafood Don, now up to 50% off*.

Meat-lovers, head over to Fu Lin Restaurant & Bar for their new Wagyu Beef Tomahawk, about 1.6 kilograms of succulent meat that is ideal for sharing. You can easily pair the slab of meat with many other delicacies in their east-meets-west menu, like Fu Lin’s signature Fried Yong Tofu, for flavours that pack a punch.

At the end of the day, stepping away from your busy schedules to be present with the family is wonderful and will be appreciated no matter what you end up choosing to do. We hope you remember to take a moment to show your parents, siblings, friends, and other loved ones some appreciation on this special day too.

With that, Happy International Day of Families!
