"Popular Japanese homeware and lifestyle brand - Mujirushi Ryohin, in short MUJI, was originally founded in Japan in 1980. The name literally translates to “No-brand quality goods” in Japanese, where the company rationalised manufacturing processes to create low-cost and good quality products. Muji has also received several accolades over the years such as the Gold Product Design Awards by the International Forum Design in Germany.
MUJI’s design philosophy is conceptualised based on 3 elements – Selection of Materials, Streamlining of Processes and Simplification of Packages. This minimalist paradigm has structured the company to focus on avoiding wastages in production and packaging. For example, the company omits the bleaching process for pulp, where the beige-coloured paper is then used for all its packaging and labels. In notable contrast to the over-embellished products in the market, MUJI’s products take a minimalistic and functional approach.
