On Keeping Your Locks Soft, Silky, and Shiny

Remember when you could shampoo your hair and maybe condition it a little before calling it a day? Now, a wide variety of hair care products exist – and each one serves a different purpose. Whether you’re pleased with your current hairdo or are lusting after a specific look, products are meant to help you get there faster, not just clutter up your shelf and add extra work to your hair routine.

Hair Serum
We’ll start with the product with the most confusing name – hair serum! Unlike serums for the face, which are specially formulated to deliver high concentrations of specific active ingredients to the skin, hair serums are a styling product.
They can also protect against humidity (aka the dreaded frizz) and are great at hydrating your ends. Use one to two drops on wet hair prior to styling. It can also be used as a finishing product, which means that hair serum is perfect for on-the-go touch-ups too!
My Hair Recipe Repairing Oil Serum by Innisfree ticks off all of our boxes. It’s rich, nourishing, and infused with Jeju soybean juice, along with argan, jojoba and macadamia oils! Use it for the perfect finish on your hair today.

Hair Oil
Hair oils, on the other hand, don’t usually help with styling. In fact, they’re moisturising! They are used to improve the health of your hair by sinking into the strands. Using oils will lubricate your hair by adding in fatty acids to replace the lipids in your hair, which will help prevent split ends and breakage.
Kiehl’s Smoothing Oil-Infused Leave-in Concentrate is a great example of what good hair oil can do for you – this versatile oil formulated with argan oil and babassu oil, which is great for split ends! It helps smooth out all hair types and can be used on dry and/or frizzy hair as a nourishing and smoothing treatment.

Hair Mask
When it comes to conditioning and anti-frizz treatments, hair masks sit at the top. Most contain rich ingredients such as argan oil or aloe vera, and in heavier concentrations than in regular conditioners. Designed to be left in the hair for a longer period of time, hair masks moisturise and repair damaged hair, leaving your tresses silky-smooth and shiny.
Lush’s Hair Custard is exactly what it sounds like on the tin: rich, creamy, and infused with vanilla. It also contains rich organic jojoba oil and fresh grapefruit juice to encourage shine. Hair Custard even contains silken tofu for that extra oomph! Dab it on your damp ends or scrunch it through dry hair for protective hydration.

Heat Protectant Spray
This particular hair product is a must for those who faff about with their curling or straightening irons. They can help your hair hold its shape post-iron, all while adding a polished finish to top it all off. However, their most important function is in their name: they protect your hair from the direct heat from the iron. Apply before using your iron, and you’ll be able to keep your hair from suffering heat damage.
L'Occitane’s Aromachologie Heat-Protective Control Mist might have a mouthful of a name, but it’s a light, silicone-free mist that protects and controls dry, hard-to-manage hair. Its heat-shield active ingredient helps protect hair against damage from blow-dryers or hair straighteners (up to 230°C), all while leaving your hair smooth and silky.

Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is every lazy person’s best friend and is designed to be foolproof to use: the alcohol or starch in this product soaks up the excess oil and grease in hair, giving it a cleaner, fresher appearance. Some can even add volume, or be used for prep before teasing. One thing to note, however – make sure you’re not spraying it directly on the hair or scalp, because it can clog your pores.
Dry shampoo is perfect for those with a busy lifestyle, but don’t denounce wet shampooing just yet – it’s important that you wash and rinse your hair with wet shampoo at least once every few days to keep your scalp fresh.
Batiste Dry Shampoo is the UK's top 1 dry shampoo, and it’s not hard to see why. Their award-winning formula is the perfect quick fix for great-looking hair between washes, and comes in an easy-to-love scent that’ll perk up your spirits and day-old blowout. You can find them easily in Watsons.
