Come Together To Play At Oktoberfest

The Singapore Science Park community gathered to celebrate the annual Science Park Oktoberfest with fresh beer, live music, and great food. What about you?

Tell A Friend!

First, a bit of history. And significance. It’s never a good idea to start an article with a history lesson, but please indulge us.

Oktoberfest is the largest annual beer festival in the world, held in Munich, Germany. It’s an 18-day folk festival that’s an important part of Bavarian culture, where it’s a celebration of King Ludwig I and Prince Therese’s marriage on 12th October 1810. The citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates to celebrate the royal event, and the commoners gladly went royally drunk on the royal dime.

Of course, it was also a properly joyous occasion, and that joie de vivre has persisted through the years, and across shores to where it’s celebrated around the world today.

For those of us who can’t afford the time to travel to Munich for 18 days to chug beer – even remarkably good beer – here on our sunny, thirst-inducing island, Oktoberfest can also be celebrated.

Organised by Singapore Business Park, we brought the entire Science Park community together for an evening of reverie. After all, nothing brings people together quite like beer. INSIDE puts on our beer goggles and dives into the action.

Science Park Oktoberfest took place at the new and picturesque 5 Science Park Drive - Shopee's new headquarters in Singapore
When you see a queue, you know its good. The Science Park community coming together for this annual celebration.

This year, the Science Park Oktoberfest was held on the grounds and within the premises of the brand-spanking-new 5 Science Park Drive building, designed for future-economy businesses and talents, and integrating larger floorplates, collaborative workspaces, and more business and lifestyle amenities.

It is the first of the next generation buildings in Singapore Science Park, which is being reinvigorated in a big way, with enhanced connectivity and uber-useful spaces.

This told us we weren’t lost
Lots of things to do and things to enjoy!
Everybody came with their buddies and had a good time
The lovely hostess Cheryl. And oh, that’s Amos.
The deejays kept the celebrations booming

We arrived, being in a ravenous way, and it was good that we did, because waiting for us were delicious and authentic German delights from Werner’s Oven.

To slake our thirst, the real-deal German Oktoberfest brew – Paulaner Beer had been specially flown to the Science Park Oktoberfest all the way from Munich.

We suspected it flew first-class, because it really did taste first-class.

As the smooth heavenly brew rolled down our parched throats, we truly felt a camaraderie with Oktoberfest celebrants all over the world.

And more importantly, having a good time bonding with friends, colleagues, and fellow tenants – all part of the Singapore Science Park family.

Entry came with beer and food
The bangers were bombastic
The pork knuckle came, the diet went
Beer on tap is the best kind
The well-balanced meal made us feel proud of ourselves. We ate heartily.
Paulaner beer was flown over from Munich

Fun and games were also in abundance, with exciting game stations from one end of the venue to the other.

Winners get to celebrate in a refreshing manner, what with the cup of beer awaiting all victors.

While everyone loves working together, the occasion gave everybody a chance to get to know one another better over fun times, and furthermore make more new connections within the community.

Are you strong enough for a free beer?
Can’t have a proper party without drums
Free beer up for grabs. Are you game enough?
Well, hi there, INSIDE reader, you’re looking real good!

The upbeat mode was further complemented with the uplifting tunes from the live brand performance by The Vibes, who was founded by former national soccer player Rafi Ali and his band.

Looking at everybody moving to the beat, it was good to know that the taste for good music is shared across the community.

Guests went up to participate onstage as well
The live band got the floor dancing
1. Host Cheryl getting volunteers from the floor for the onstage games
2. Co-host Amos went out into the crowd to find superheroes too
3. Our superheroes with their arms outstretched. The challenge? Whoever can hold out a mug of beer outstretched for the longest time wins! – It’s harder than it sounds
4. BEFORE
5. AFTER
There was plenty of cheers through the evening
Party-goes came from all over Singapore Science Park
These guys even brought their own props to the party! Kudos!
We found the place really charming, with really nice places to sit and gather

While partying in a grand way, we can also party responsibly. Revolv, one of the startup tenants in Bridge+ at Ascent, was there with their eco-friendly reusable cup that’s part of a smart deposit-based platform of reusable food and beverage packaging that aims to eliminate single-use waste in Asia. So, at Oktoberfest we could borrow one of their cups for just a small fee, and beer tastes better out of a proper cup anyways.

More than a flexible office space, Bridge+ is a community platform which brings together diverse people working around a collaborative culture and shared economies, and is located just across the road from the festivities.

The Revolv cup, doing our bit to reduce waste
As the sky went dark, the celebration kept going
Our VIPs graced the event, and enjoyed themselves thoroughly too
Friends from the office in Galaxis, one-north
Smiles and good times abounded through the evening
A great time to catch up with old friends as well
