Established in 1976, The Body Shop is a make-up and skincare beauty chain conceived in Brighton, England. The brand is owned by Brazilian multinational - Natura & Co, which is one of the largest pure-play beauty corporations in the world. The brand was founded by British doyenne - Anita Lucia Roddick, who was known as an environmental campaigner who retailed natural beauty products which later shaped ethical consumerism. The chain has since spread like wildfire, with over 3,000 stores in 65 countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.
The cosmetics franchise is recognised for its commitment to sustainability where all its raw materials are procured from renewable sources. To support this cause, all Body Shop products are tagged with an environmental score which informs customers about its biodegradability, natural ingredients composition and water footprint. In addition, The Body Shop continuously engages in “green chemistry” to reduce the use or production of toxic chemicals which pollute our environment. The Body Shop stores in Singapore adopt a carbon-balancing programme which is designed for countries where renewable energy is unavailable. The programme helps to prevent and absorb unavoidable carbon emissions.
