Expanded to China in 2010, the CapitaLand ’My Schoolbag’ Programme focuses on providing schoolbags containing school supplies and daily necessities to underserved Grade 1 students with funding support from CapitaLand Hope Foundation (CHF). These include basic stationery such as pencils and pencil cases, as well as art and handicraft tools, to enrich the lives of children and promote holistic development. Over the past 12 years, CHF has donated more than 12 million yuan and benefitted 130,000 Grade 1 children across over 1,500 schools in 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions through the programme.
During the 2022 #GivingAsOne global campaign, CHF donated schoolbags to 2,400 Grade 1 children in 18 provinces and cities across China. In Shanghai, Beijing, Xuzhou and Shenyang, staff volunteers contributed over 240 hours to visit the primary schools and distribute schoolbags to the students in person.
“Maintaining the human touch and spreading warmth is key in charitable work. Through the CapitaLand ‘My Schoolbag’ programme in 2020, I met the students and teachers from Shenyang Yucheng School which specialises in special education. Though initially shy, the students opened up to me after various interactions with them while volunteering over the years. Through my conversations with them, I was especially impressed by the optimism of one student who draws and practices martial arts. I saw her again during the Special Olympics this year, standing on the winning podium and beaming with joy. I hope she will continue to shine in the coming years.“

Amidst the Covid-19 restrictions, the market also tapped on technology to rally the public’s support through a Step Challenge organised on the WeChat application from April to August 2022. For every 150,000 steps clocked, CHF matched 1 schoolbag for the vulnerable students. Collectively, through the 2.4 billion steps matched, CHF donated 2,000 schoolbags to the students, as well as 600,000 yuan to the beneficiaries of CapitaLand Kids @ Education Bursary in 2022. Step Challenge not only helped to advocate an active and healthy lifestyle, but also showed CapitaLand’s commitment to do good for the community as a socially responsible company.
Through the CapitaLand ‘My Schoolbag’ programme, CHF hopes to help children gain self-confidence and be encouraged to pursue their dreams. Moving forward, we will continue to walk alongside these children, and to send hope, care, and blessings!
